Some thoughts on value | Part 1

Glass blocks, image taken at Material Matters exhibiton, rescued by Studio TIP and given value again.

I’ve been thinking about value a lot recently.

The more I think about it, the more I believe it holds the key to creating circular economies.

We look after and care for the things that we value.

Sometimes time erodes value, sometimes time adds value.

Care is able to add value.

If we price something highly it always seems to add value, whether that value is rooted in reality or just within our minds.

If we discard something, no longer showing it care, we remove value, until someone is ready to care for it again.

‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’

Until the first man finds out you value his trash and then suddenly he changes his mind and can now see the value in it again.

Circular economies will require a lot of labor, a lot of labor that’s rooted in care.

Lots of sorting, sifting through, looking after, making good again. Lot’s of time and energy needed to add value back again.
